Oct 08, 2018

Civil Engineering is a branch of engineering that focuses on the planning, design, construction, supervision, and maintenance of infrastructures such as roads, malls, schools, housing projects, power lines, irrigation, and many more.

How long will this course take?

Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering (BSCE) majors usually take this course for five years. However, students can complete the degree program in less than five years in schools with a trimestral curriculum.

Remember that before you can be formally recognized as a professional civil engineer, you will need to take the Civil Engineering Licensure Examinations under the Professional Regulations Commission. The exams are usually scheduled in May and November.

What traits and skill sets would you need?

BS Civil Engineering is not an easy course; thus, students studying this course must be equipped with different skills to successfully finish the degree program. Students will need the following skills in order to graduate from BSCE:

  • Mathematical skills – Like in any engineering course, there are a lot of math involved in BSCE. You will need to use different mathematical methods to solve a given problem.
  • Critical thinking skills – In planning, designing, and maintaining infrastructures, critical thinking is needed to identify the strengths and weaknesses of your project so that in turn you will be able to find solutions if problems would arise.
  • Analytical skills – To make an innovative and effective design, analyzing the needs and requirements of the product is required.
  • Graphical skills – You need the ability to transform a design into reality.
  • Decision-making skills – Because civil engineers have the responsibility of planning and designing projects, you should be able to intelligently decide about several things such as costs, materials that will be used, and many more.
  • Communication skills – Civil engineers are expected to collaborate with architects and other individuals in planning, designing, and building a project. The ability to communicate well both orally and in written form is then essential to become successful in this field.

What subjects would you expect from this?

Similar to a lot of engineering courses, you can expect a lot of math and physics classes in this course. Besides those, you can expect the following:

Remember that classes in BS Civil Engineering are not only held in the classroom but also in the laboratory. Students are expected to apply the things that are taught in class in hands-on projects.

What career can you pursue with a Civil Engineering degree?

Civil Engineering is one of the broadest disciplines in engineering; thus, it offers a lot of career opportunities for its graduates. Finishing the degree, you can be one of the following:

  • Structural Engineer
  • Project Engineer
  • Staff Engineer
  • Inspector
  • Associate Engineer
  • Engineering Educator
  • Owner/Partner in an engineering firm
  • Environmental Engineer
  • City Planner
  • Traffic Engineer

If you either haven’t passed the board or chose not to take the board exams, having a BS Civil Engineering degree will enable you to be employed as the following:

  • Surveyor
  • Drafter
  • Technician

Is BS Civil Engineering the right course for you?

Are you interested in planning and designing projects? Do you perhaps want to improve our country’s infrastructures and urban planning? Do you love math and physics? If you answered yes to all these questions, then, this course might be perfect for you!

Engineering courses have the reputation of being one of the hardest degree programs to finish, but with enough passion and determination, you’ll be able to finish the course–maybe even with flying colors!
