WATCH: Filipinas Who Are Making Strides For Gender Equality

The recent years have seen women pushing boundaries for gender equality. Women are now slaying it in technical trades like welding, automotive servicing, and electrical installation. What was once known as a “boys’ field” has welcomed girls like Chiara Ledesma, who excels in her STEM career path as a Google Women Techmakers scholar. And then there’s young yet fearless Kelsey Hadjirul who proves that one voice can start ripples of change for LGBTQ+ rights.

Pushing boundaries was the theme of the last three videos for the #FutureOfYoungPinays campaign. If you have a career dream but feel like it’s unreachable because of society’s expectations, let the women of TESDA, Computer Science student Chiara Ledesma, and LGBTQ+ rights advocate Kelsey Hadjirul inspire you to follow your own path!

Here’s a rundown of videos that will show you that women can be anything they want to be, regardless of gender norms.

1. All Hands On Tech: Girls In STEM

Memorable quote:

“I became very afraid to ask questions in class. Everyone else wasn’t asking as many questions, and I didn’t want it to look like I didn’t understand it just because I was a girl.”

Why you should watch the video:

If you’ve ever had doubts if you should pursue your inclination to science and tech (because you’re a girl), let Google Women Techmakers scholar Chiara Ledesma be your living proof that girls can excel in the field. This aspiring data scientist will show you that STEM is not just a boys’ field. Listen to this passionate lady talk about the wonders of the STEM field, what it can do for the world, and what women can do for this industry!

2. Women in TESDA

Memorable quotes:

“Malakas ang babae dahil hindi tayo susuko.” (Women are strong because we don’t give up.)

“Lakas lang ng loob at paniniwala sa sarili na kaya natin ‘to, magagawa natin ‘yan.” (With some courage and confidence, we can do anything.)

Why you should watch the video:

It’s about time women stop limiting their career options because of what people say is or isn’t a woman’s job. Ever pictured yourself in a technical trade, power tools in hand? This action-packed video of women in tech-voc careers will show you it’s possible!

P.S. If you get inspired to pursue one of these tech-voc careers, check out the free courses in TESDA Women’s Center.

3. LGBTQ+ Advocate Kelsey Hadjirul: How To Be Brave Amid Fear And Criticism

Memorable quote:

“Kapag dumating yung pagkakataon na ‘yon, merong nang-abuso sa ‘yo sa pagiging tao mo, kailangan mong maging higit sa sarili mo. Kailangan mong labasan yung takot na ‘yon.” (When someone steps on your rights as a human being, you need to go beyond yourself. You need to step out of your fear.)

Why you should watch the video:

It takes courage to speak up in front of a crowd. It takes even more courage to speak up about a controversial issue. Young LGBTQ+ rights advocate Kelsey Hadjirul achieved both feats at the age of 10 years old. Let Kelsey’s story inspire you to be brave and pursue your own path, even if it won’t come easy.

In every corner of the world, women are reaching new heights. And we can see that when women succeed, they lift up everyone else around thembe it in the form of tech-voc industries powered up with more professionals, STEM careers enriched by women’s perspectives and skills, or a society that gives equal rights to all people.
