More than 400 years.
That’s how long University of Santo Tomas (UST) has been around, establishing itself as one of the country’s premier university. And that’s not just hearsay, it’s a fact.
Being the oldest existing university in Asia, UST has a long list of achievements piled up in its track record, including successful alumni in various fields such as business, public service, sports, medicine, among others. We guess you can say, wherever you go, there is a Thomasian around.
Do you know any UST alumni in your chosen field? While there are a lot of successful people hailing from this prestigious school, let’s get acquainted with these five notable graduates:
If you’re one of those 90’s kids who stayed up late at night to watch TV, then you might know her first as Sang’gre Amihan in the fantasy series Encantadia. But even long after that, Iza Calzado is still in her prime as a multi-awarded actress, dancer, model, and TV host. Guess her expressive and creative genius can be credited to her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in UST? Because tbh, she is one fine art in the entertainment industry.
If there’s someone who embraces the catchphrase “ball is life” IRL, Jeric Teng would be it. Born to a family of athletes (imagine having a father and a brother who are also professional basketball players!), this Business Administration graduate from UST has his game shoes on as a shooting guard for North Port Batang Pier of the Philippine Basketball Association. In fact, he already showed a lot of potential during his student years as he played for UST’s basketball team, earning him the nickname “King Tiger” during his senior year.
PS. Did we mention he won Rookie of the Year award in 2009?
Long before Medical Technology (MedTech) became a buzzword for the health sciences, Agnes Medenilla has already set her heart on biotechnology… and maybe her eyes, too, on microscope samples! A proud BS MedTech graduate from UST, she’s also a two-time president of the Philippine Association of Medical Technologist (PAMET), a member of the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP), and a faculty member at the University of Perpetual Help System DALTA, among many others.
All these to say that she’s making a difference in the health industry, and she’s got that Thomasian spirit loud and proud. And tbh, UST can’t be any prouder!
If Chickenjoy sparks joy in you, this name is the man to thank: Tony Tan-Caktiong. He is the founder and chairman of Jollibee Foods Corporation, a worldwide food chain company that brought Filipino favorites like Mang Inasal and Red Ribbon to name a few. But did ya know this multi-awarded entrepreneur is a Thomasian at heart? Yup, he took up Chemical Engineering in college. Guess that’s the secret behind Jollibee’s crispylicious, juicylicious chicken!
Y’all know the beauty pageant answers “What is beauty if the brain is empty?” Well, Janine Tugonon can’t relate. This UST pride finished her Pharmacy degree with Latin honors (cum laude, ladies and gents!) and became a Licensed Pharmacist shortly thereafter. But of course, you might’ve seen her first slaying the game at Miss Universe 2012, where she won 1st runner-up. Currently, she’s continuing her studies and walking the international runways. Talk about girl power!
PS. She also won UST pageants as Miss Pharmacy and Miss Thomasian Personality!
Choosing the right course is just as important as choosing the right school. Where do you want to be in the future? It all depends on the choices you make today. Make the best decision for your education! Who knows? You might be on our next list of notable alumni! *crossed fingers*
