8 Lessons Dorm Life Can Teach You

Living away from your family for the first time in your life can be terrifying, but at the same time, exhilarating. For the first time, you will have more decisions to make on your own. And you will learn to do the things you otherwise wouldn’t do at home.

Needless to say, this experience will teach you to be independent in so many ways. Here are some of the most important lessons living in a dorm will teach you:

1. Live within your means

Budgeting your allowance is one of the first skills you learn when you live in a dorm. There’s just so much to spend on that you will inevitably learn how to manage your finances. You will learn which things are the non-negotiables and those you can live without. Learning this early on in life will prepare you for the future when you have to earn your own money and manage your finances.

2. Prioritizing is key.

In college, you have to juggle all things at once – being active in organizations, making it to early classes, being on top of your acads, doing intensive research papers, and socializing with your friends. In addition to the university life, living away from your home also means you have to deliberately allot and spend time with your family.

3. Minimalism is the way to go.

Dorm rooms are often very small. You will learn to organize your things efficiently, but you will also learn that there are things that just don’t deserve to take up space in your room.

This is how living in a dorm will make you realize that you can live simply and get rid of excesses – be it clothes, accessories, or even abstract things.

4. Learn to cook from scratch

You can buy meals in convenience stores, fast food and restaurants. But at some point, you would have to cook your own food because it’s healthier and more cost-effective. Yes, cooking requires more effort, but once you get the hang of it, you will surely enjoy it. It also helps to get cookware that are easy to use and allow you to cook healthier food. The non-stick Silkway pan, for example, lets you cook food using only a small amount of oil.

5. Use technology to your advantage

One of the reasons people don’t like to do chores is that it takes too much time and involves so many steps. Take for example, cooking. Some are easily turned off by the sheer amount of food prep- buying groceries, chopping, measuring, and the list goes on- plus add to that the unenviable task of cleaning everything afterwards. It’s a good thing there are products now that remove some of these steps and make your life easier. Just like grocery delivery apps and one-step cleaning products, cookware like Silkway pans make cooking more convenient by having a thicker laminated film that’s easy to clean! With this, you can just wipe off leftovers with a soft cloth or sponge.

6. The art of compromise

For the first time, you will have to share a very personal space with someone you barely know. This means you have to adjust to his or her habits, schedule, and preference! You will need to decide on things like dorm decorations, keeping the lights on or off at night, and even who showers first. Having a roommate not only teaches you how to compromise, but also teaches you the importance of communicating properly with other people.

7. Family will always be home

Living away will make you realize how you actually love being home. You realize that nothing beats your mom’s sinigang, your dad blasting old music on Sunday mornings, and even the noisy banter of your younger siblings.

Gone are the days when you can just peep through the other room and say hey to the fambam. So you need to exert more effort now like creating a chat group for you and your siblings or setting aside a regular video call with your parents.

8. With freedom comes responsibility.

Living in a dorm is almost synonymous to having freedom. But as you enjoy not being asked where you’re going and who you’re with, you also realize that you should be responsible for your actions. You will realize that you are responsible for your health, safety and of course your future. This will motivate you to strive to become the best version of yourself.

These are just some of the things students learn only from a unique experience like living in a dorm. Through dorm life, you will learn valuable life skills and lessons professors can’t teach you in the classroom.
