A Guide to Student Friendly Spaces in Mindanao Universities

 

One of the keys to become an effective student is to learn how to study smarter, not harder.

Did you know that setting the mood, developing a study timetable, and choosing the most suitable environment can help stimulate senses and increase mental focus? That is why community spaces conducive for learning are a top priority of colleges and universities to give students more ways to maximize their education. Mindanao’s vast landscapes and extensive coastlines make for an ideal setting for universities to establish student friendly community spaces. Here are some of them:

Mindanao State University – Iligan Institute of Technology

MSU-IIT is one of the major hubs of demographic diversity in Iligan City. The campus is a laid-back, waterfall-laden oasis rich in history and cultural beauty. Scattered throughout the campus grounds are pocket parks, quiet pavilions and green pathways that are suitable for students who want to study, research, or conduct group activities.

 

University of Mindanao

The Learning and Information Center of the University of Mindanao is a place that provides access to information in many formats such as books, thesis and dissertations, periodicals, multimedia materials, electronic resources, and online databases. Discussion rooms are also provided for groups of 5-10 students who want to collaborate on their projects. The university also provides an Instructional Media Center equipped with projectors, digital screens, video cameras, editing machines and sound mixers. It even has a production section for instructional films and slide presentations.

 

Xavier University

In Xavier University, students have access to an impressive array of student-friendly facilities. One of which is the Jose Chavez Alvarez Technology Complex. A 3,780 square meter facility with classrooms, laboratories, workshops, a canteen, library, and auditorium, among others. The building’s concept incorporates green architecture and environment design to provide a more stimulating and sustainable environment for its students and employees. Xavier University also houses the Manresa Farm and Wildlife Sanctuary specifically for its College of Agriculture program. Other spaces suitable for studying are the several parks and gazebos located in between buildings.

 

Ateneo de Davao University

The ADDU Library System is a massive library system connected to its sister schools all over the Philippines namely Ateneo de Manila University, Ateneo de Naga University, Ateneo de Zamboanga University and Ateneo de Cagayan. Ateneo de Davao also boasts of a 12-story Community Center, Davao City’s tallest educational tower, and a multi-purpose space called Martin Hall, the biggest student service center at 7 stories. The Community Center features a plaza on the first floor, a study complex for students called the Miguel Pro Learning Commons on the second floor while the upper floors are for faculty, researchers, outreach institutes and prime laboratories. While the Martin Hall houses a 350-car parking facility, four basketball courts that can double as an assembly hall that can fit 3,500 people, a theater, jogging track, gym and other sports facilities. Student organization offices and conference rooms can be found in the mezzanine.

 

University of the Philippines Mindanao

Before the establishment of UP Mindanao in Barangay Mintal, Davao City, the area is already one of Department of Agriculture’s research centers. The vast land and lush greenery of the campus are ideal places to set up an academic and research hub. This once sleepy barangay has been rapidly transformed into a small university town with establishments and businesses built around the university serving the needs of both students and faculty. UP Mindanao also aims to create a green university town, being a garden campus with emphasis on the Mindanaoan culture with each building reflecting an ethnolinguistic group in Mindanao.

 

La Salle University Ozamiz

The La Salle University Libraries and Media Centers provide access to other library collections within Misamis Occidental that support the instructional, research and other bibliographical needs of both students and faculty.  Worth noting is that this inter-library service also offers short-term loans and document delivery. Other research collections in the Misamis Occidental area are available for use by graduate students. The LSU Library participates in cooperative programs and linkages with almost 50 consortiums all over the country.

 

Mindanao State University – Marawi

Shops, pharmacies, eateries, and dormitories are located in Mindanao State University, Marawi campus. The commercial center located near the gymnasium has establishments that can provide for the needs of MSU constituents like groceries, school supplies, mosque, chapel, billiard halls, bakeries, movie houses, gym, photocopy services and other commodities. Other student-friendly spaces in MSU-Marawi include a Multimedia Database Center where students can readily access information in various formats. The university’s Digitization Project converts hard to find research materials on Muslims in the Philippines into a digital form while its Digital Library provides information literacy training capabilities to various regions in the ARMM.
