What is Computer Engineering?

Computer Engineering is a branch of engineering that links electrical engineering and computer science (which focuses on data and algorithm). This course is designed to provide students with a strong foundation in science, mathematics, and engineering; as well as knowledge in software and hardware. It focuses on innovating computing platforms and applications to make it safer, more efficient, and effective.

How long is this course?

Like other engineering courses, the Bachelor of Science in Computer Engineering or BSCpE takes 5 years to complete. Although students who enroll in a school that follows the trimestral curriculum may complete BSCpE in just 4 years.

To be a Computer Engineer, you need to have an extensive college education. A graduate of BS Computer Engineering automatically becomes a Computer Engineer since this profession does not require any board exam. However, there several certifications that you can take to benchmark your skills in the industry. These certifications include Cisco Network (Wireless and Voice), Microsoft Systems Administration (MCSA), Project Management, and VMware.

What traits and skill sets would you need?

A strong foundation in computer is required in this course. Aside from the technical knowledge, here are some of the things that you need to become successful in this field:

  • Analytical skills you need to be able to identify, analyze, and formulate solutions to complex problems.
  • Communication skills – you need to communicate your thoughts effectively and work closely with clients and colleagues.
  • Professional development – because technology is ever-evolving, you need to have the initiative to update your learnings and be in the loop with the latest innovations.
  • Certifications – earning certifications help you gauge your knowledge and skills; they also add to your credentials for you to advance in your profession.
  • Tools and technology proficiency – your professional toolbox should contain knowledge in major areas of computer engineering like network analysis, softwares, product development, and programming. You should familiarize yourself with tools like logic analyzers, probes, digital analysis systems, and a lot more.

What subjects would you expect from this?

Some of the core knowledge areas that you may encounter while in this course based on the guidelines set by the Commission on Higher Education starting the academic year 2018-2019 include:

  • Circuits and Electronics
  • Computing Algorithm
  • Computer Architecture and Organization
  • Digital Design
  • Embedded Systems
  • Computer Networks
  • Professional Practice
  • Information Security
  • Signal Processing
  • Systems and Project Engineering
  • Software Design
  • Occupational Health and Safety
  • Technopreneurship

And since this course deals primarily with networks and systems, better to harness your ability to understand mind-bending abstract concepts by now.

What career can you pursue with a Computer Engineering degree?

Computer Engineering provides a number of career options when you graduate! Here are some of the jobs that you can pursue:

– Network Systems Administrator

– Data Communications Engineer

– Software Developer

– Quality Assurance Engineer

– Systems Engineer

– Network Architect

– Systems Designer and Analyst

– Computer Systems Manager

– Test Engineers

– Support Specialist

– Applications Analyst

– Robotics Control Engineer

– Computer Consultant

– Senior Communications Engineer

Is BS Computer Engineering the right course for you?

Computer Engineering is a pretty tough course in a way that you’re going to spend a lot of your time in researching, analyzing, designing, developing, and testing computer systems and components. Sometimes, things don’t work the way it was planned and you have to start your process all over again. But if solving seemingly impossible tasks is what thrills you, this course is right for you!
