Aeronautical Engineering is a branch of engineering that deals with the methods and science of flight. This includes researching, conceptualizing and designing components that are designed to create aircraft, along with other aerodynamic characteristics such as behavior in the atmosphere.
How long is this course?
Like all engineering courses, Bachelor of Aeronautical Engineering majors usually take this course for five years.
But before you can be considered as a professional aeronautical engineer, you will need to take the Board of Aeronautical Engineering Exams, which is under the Professional Regulations Commission. The three-day exams are held during November every year.
What traits and skill sets would you need?
Aeronautical engineering not only involves a great deal of knowledge in math and physics; you will also need to have a certain aptitude for the following skills if you want to pass this course:
- Analytical Skills – you’ll also need to learn how to assess situations and how each result brought about by changes in design, environments, and operations can make an impact.
- Communication Skills – given that part of aeronautical engineering also involves inputting and reporting data, you will also have to know how to provide information concisely, both in written and verbal form.
- Computer Knowledge – as expected in most engineering courses, you’ll be working with computers in order to design aircraft material so this is a crucial skill for you to learn as well.
- Critical Thinking – one also needs to have a strong grasp of logic and reasoning in order to distinguish the strengths and weaknesses of each problem that’s presented.
- Excellent Mathematical Skills – given that majority of the course revolves around solving basic and complex math equations, you will need to have a strong grasp of mathematics if you want to breeze through the program.
- Graphical Skills – since you will be dealing with designing materials before developing them, this skill is also expected.
- Great Aptitude for Physics – since aeronautical engineering also involves monitoring and studying how air affects an aircraft and its movements, you’ll also need to love physics as well.
- Organizational Skills – considering that aeronautical engineering also entails handling various tasks, you will need to learn how to manage your time.
- Problem Solving Skills – aeronautical engineering also requires you to identify problems and find ways on how to rectify them by developing solutions.
- Technical Skills – as expected of a course where one needs to have a knack for engineering, mathematics, science and computers, technical skills are important for you to solve specific tasks and duties.

- Non-Technical Subjects (e.g. English, Filipino, Humanities, Life and Works of Rizal, Social Science)
- Technical Electives (e.g. Home Built Aircraft, Rocket Engines)
Students are also mandated to undergo an on-the-job training in a flight company or any recognized aeronautics center, which is usually arranged by the school and heavily supervised by a senior aeronautical engineer of that center and a faculty member of the school. Each student is then evaluated for their performance by the end of the on-the-job training.
