Exploring Engineering: Mechanical Engineering

Mechanical Engineering is one of the more diverse branches of engineering that focuses on the conceptualization, development, installation, manufacturing and operation of any object that has moving parts such as machinery, engines and other structures.

Tackling this course also requires studying chemical and thermal energy and converting such energies into mechanical work, which can be harnessed to perform different tasks using power plants, engines and other structures.

By nature, mechanical engineering also entails being a problem solver and most mechanical engineers tend to be innovative in a sense that their products, inventions and other technologies are created for the benefit of humankind. From space exploration to health care, mechanical engineers have made a difference to various human lives.

How long is this course?

Like most engineering courses, Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering majors usually take this course for five years, though schools that follow trimestral calendars can finish this in four years.

Mechanical Engineering graduates, however, need to take the Mechanical Engineering Licensure Exam before they can practice as professional mechanical engineers, so expect additional months of studying if you intend to take review classes for the board exams. Supervised by the Professional Regulation Commission, the exam is usually scheduled twice a year during March and September.

What traits and skill sets would you need?

Mechanical engineering not only involves a great deal of knowledge in math, chemistry and physics; you will also need to have a certain aptitude for the following skills if you want to pass this course: 

  • Analytical Skills – as expected in a course with a great deal of problem solving, you need to have a keen eye in assessing how to detect and fix problems in various machinery.
  • Creativity – mechanical engineering also promotes innovation so expect to create proposals for various prototypes during class.
  • Interpersonal Skills – since you’ll also be working as a group with your classmates during activities such as lab works, group presentations and thesis reports, you’ll need to learn how to get along with your classmates and professors and work as a team.
  • Mathematical Skills – with the number of mathematics and engineering-related subjects in this course, you’ll be tackling a lot of mathematical equations to make your prototypes work, so you’ll need to be familiar with solving basic and complex formulas to pass this course.
  • Technical Skills – a certain knack for engineering, mathematics and scientific matters are highly coveted in this program.

Since you’ll also spend a lot of time developing components and tinkering with different machinery, expect to spend a great deal of your classes in the laboratory as well as the classroom.
