Major, Major! Four Schools in the Philippines Offering Double Majors
Found at least two majors that you want to take but don’t know which one to choose? Or are you looking for a specific course that can offer the best of both worlds where you can pursue both?
Fortunately, some schools are generous enough to solve your dilemmas by offering not one but two college majors rolled into one!
Taking dual or double majors is different from pursuing dual or double degrees. Having a double degree means you hold two diplomas with different concentrations, while a double major means you’re taking two degrees from the same college but will only earn one diploma. For example, having a degree in Business Administration and Communication Arts means you’re taking a double degree. Taking Psychology and Social Work – two programs from the liberal arts program – as your majors means you’re taking double majors.
Check out some of these schools that offer such programs:
Ateneo de Manila University
Honor students from the School of Science and Engineering can choose to take either a BS in Applied Physics with Materials Science and Engineering and BS Chemistry with Materials Science and Engineering.
St. Scholastica’s College, Manila
The school offers two double-major programs: Lia Lia Program and the Com Com Program. With the former, undergraduates are given the option to pursue either two AB (liberal arts) or BS (business) programs, while the latter enables students to pursue two BSBA (business administration) majors at the same time.
University of the Philippines Diliman
UP Diliman’s Bachelor of Secondary Education program also offers a double major degree to students. Undergraduates can opt to major in Art Education, Special Education, Biology & Chemistry, and Communication Arts – English and Communication Arts – Filipino, with any one of the aforementioned majors or Health Education, Physics and Social Studies as their second majors.
University of San Carlos
The Cebu-based institution’s Department of Business Administration also has a Marketing Management & Entrepreneurship double major program for students.
Ladderized Programs*
Some schools, however, not only offer a double major undergraduate degree but also provide ladderized programs, where students can graduate with their bachelor’s and master’s degrees at the same time – usually under the same major – but earn just one diploma.
Ladderized programs, like double majors, are also taken in five years.
