Org Comm, Dev Comm, Mass Comm — What are the Similarities and Differences?

Good communication skills are essential to a person’s success. From personal, day-to-day interactions to building communities or corporate relationships, good communication is a must.

 

Taking up a course in communication can teach students how to present themselves, converse effectively, write business correspondence, create presentations, and many more. Graduates of this program are presented with a wide range of career opportunities whether in corporate, government, sales, media, advertising, and education among other industries.

 

But be wary when choosing a degree program because not all Communication courses mean the same thing. Some of the most common are Mass Communication, Organizational Communication, and Development Communication–they all have communication in their names but what really are these courses? What is Organizational Communication?

Org Comm is a four-year degree program that tackles communication within organizations. Some of the interesting topics students can learn from this course are the dynamics of communication within hierarchies, technical writing, publishing, Philippine culture, argumentation, and psychology.

 

Org Comm graduates may work as corporate communications director, communications specialist, employee relations representative, communications strategist, and a lot more. The De La Salle University and University of the Philippines – Manila are some of the universities that offer this course.


What is Development Communication?

Dev Comm is a degree program that focuses on the role of communication in the pursuit of development. It uses communication to promote social development through engaging communities, encouraging exchange of information, assessing risk and opportunities, and establishing conducive environments. The course is intended to teach students different communication theories and use them in managing information and targeting audiences across different platforms.

 

With a degree or diploma in Development Communication, you can work as a communications officers and monitoring and evaluation officer for local and international organizations, development officer, or researcher. Some of the universities that offer Dev Comm include Visayas State University, UP – Los Banos, Batangas State University, Central Mindanao State University, Benguet State University, and University of Eastern Philippines.

 

What is Mass Communication

Mass Communication is a four-year degree program that centers on the different methods of sending information to the public through the use of mass media. The core areas of this program include Multimedia Design, Advertising, Film and Television, Public Relations, and Journalism. Mass Comm teaches students about the theories, practical applications, ethics, concepts, law, and history of mass media.

 

Since Mass Comm covers a wide scope of expertise, graduates from this course have more career paths to choose from. Students can land a job as a journalist, editor, public relations officer, copywriter, photojournalist, news reporter, advertising consultant, professor, and filmmaker among others. UP Diliman, Silliman University, Colegio de San Juan de Letran, Lyceum of the Philippines, Ateneo de Davao, San Sebastian College, and De La Salle University are just some of the universities in the Philippines that are known to produce distinguished mass comm graduates.
