#QualityCheck101: University Performance Measures that Matter

There is no such thing as a perfect school. What exists, however, is a perfect match between your academic goals and choice of school.

Deciding on which school to attend in college can be both exciting and nerve-racking. Since this life-changing decision can determine your future career and equip you with necessary skills and competencies, it’s highly important to make the right choice— not just based on gut feel, but backed up with real data.

With more than 2,000 local colleges and universities accredited by the Commission on Higher Education (CHED), finding that perfect match is a challenge in itself.

man's difficulty in deciding

While it’s easier to go with a popular school or your family’s alma mater (hello loyalty!), there are legit performance measures you can use to evaluate whether your prospect school is #worthy of your wit and intelligence. Besides, they shouldn’t be the only ones doing the choosing you know.

Here are 3 good indicators of a quality-approved school:

Center of Excellence (COE) / Center of Development (COD)

As a part of CHED’s mandate, COEs and CODs are continuously being assessed and established among higher education institutions (HEIs) in the country. With hopes of being at par with our ASEAN neighbors, recipient schools are given grants to further strengthen the quality of education in their respective disciplines. #competitive

Instructional quality, Research and Publication, Extension and Linkages and Institutional Qualifications are the general selection criteria used to determine COEs and CODs.

National Licensure Exam Passing Rates

Each school has its own niche and strength when it comes to disciplines. There are schools best known for its Pharmacy degree, others for its Psychology program. And it’s a good thing! Although asking a friend or a successful alumna usually works well for college recommendations, there are also annual standardized exams that can give you a more data-driven approach.

Based on the Professional Regulatory Commission (PRC), there are 46 disciplines requiring licensure exams in the country. So you could say, passing the boards doesn’t only make you look like a pro, it makes you one (read: more than just bragging rights).

Check out the top 10 disciplines with the highest national passing rate for 2017:
