“Tara, sali tayong org!”
This is probably one of the most common sentences students will hear from their buddies once a new academic year begins. There are a lot of benefits from joining school orgs- you gain new friends and you get to participate in activities that feed your passions and interests. On the other hand, some would argue that orgs take up a student’s time, money, and focus away from academics, which is why you’re enrolled anyway. So how do you know which org is your match? Here’s a checklist to consider before applying.
- Research and ask around
The first thing you need to ask yourself is “What is this org about?” You don’t want to be a part of something that you’ll end up regretting for your whole student life. It would be helpful to know the org’s goals, activities, and even their alumni. This will give you a glimpse of what they focus on and what changes they want to make. Asking members and non-members can also help you make your final decision. Remember, research is the key!
- Know your true interests
After making sure you know more about the org’s objectives, the next thing to consider is yours. Did the information you now have about the organization struck you and made you feel that you want to be a part of it? You have to make sure that you believe what the org believes in, that you share their passions, and that you are more than willing to give your time and effort to the cause.
- Check your academic load
Take a long, hard look at your class schedule and academic units. Will you have time to attend weekly org meetings? Do you think you can spearhead org events? You don’t want to add another commitment that you won’t be able to give your full attention to in the long run. Do you have the capacity to be an efficient and effective member? You have to keep in mind that the last thing you want to give is a half-baked performance and be a burden to the org. It’s one thing to challenge yourself in accomplishing multiple things at the same time and maximizing your stay in school, but you have to keep your priorities in check.
- Take the leap
All things considered and you are still 110% determined to join, then it is time for you to apply and join the org! Attend an orientation to know the requirements and process. Approach the members and ask away. Talk to fellow applicants and devise a strategy on how you can help each other pass the rigorous application. There will always be risks and sacrifices when joining school organizations, but if you strongly believe that the org will improve you personally and professionally, then go for it!
Being part of an organization is no joke. Don’t push through if you’re joining for the sake of beefing up your CV or because a classmate peer-pressured you. Keep in mind that aside from experience, growth, and connections that school organizations can provide, student members are expected to give their valuable time and tireless efforts to the org.
