Do you want to study at the University of the Philippines (UP), but do not have the time? Do not fret; UP Open University offers open and distance learning for you.
UP Open University (UPOU) is the fifth of eight constituent universities in UP. It offers online education to students wanting to take an associate, undergraduate, post-baccalaureate diploma, master’s, doctoral, non-formal, and certification programs.
Whether you are a student who is struggling to balance your studies with your full-time work, a parent who cannot just leave your homes, or an Overseas Filipino Worker who still wants to pursue further studies online, UPOU offers a variety of courses and programs you can choose from! But like the other constituent universities, admission is also competitive and requires competencies and qualifications.
In OPOU, all its 31 main courses are divided into three main faculties: Faculty of Information and Communication Studies (FICS), Faculty of Education (FEd), and Faculty of Management and Development Studies (FICS). Courses are offered on a semester or trimester basis, depending on the course or program taken. And of course, all of them can be taken online with teachers that are responsive and adaptive to your schedules too.
UPOU offers a variety of courses from associate and bachelor to doctorate degrees. Looking for an undergraduate degree? You can apply for Associate in Arts, Bachelor of Education Studies, and Bachelor of Arts in Multimedia Studies. Looking for a master’s or doctorate degree? Courses such as Master of Information Systems, Master of Public Management, and Doctor of Communication are available.
Or are you just looking for further post-baccalaureate studies? Diploma programs such as Diploma in Science Teaching and Diploma in Social Work and Graduate Certificates in Distance Education and in ASEAN Studies are also offered. OPOU got it all for you! The university has definitely taken its online education to a world-class level.
But wait, there’s more! UPOU also offers other programs and online courses that can be taken online and in the comfort of your own homes!
Continuing Education Programs

Care for the Child with Special Needs, Organic Agriculture, and New Enterprise Planning are just some of the programs you can take online, without going physically to classrooms! How convenient, right?
It is always good to sharpen the saw and seek to continuously improve our knowledge and skills in our fields of specialization. It is also commendable that people always find ways to continue learning more through various means, despite their busy schedules. These programs have definitely helped everyone who wants to continue their education at their own pace.
Other Online Courses
Aside from taking programs that can be credited to your educational background, you can also take short courses for your preference. UPOU takes online learning to another notch by also offering short courses that can be learned fast and at everyone’s pace. The university certainly adapts to rapid changes in our internet landscape and the new generations.
Massive Open Distance e-Learning (MODeL) is the official massive open online course (MOOC) platform of OPOU. Its courses are designed to cater to different learning styles, where you can choose the format that suits you. Oh, and you can take all of these for free! With MODeL, you are assured of free, relevant, and quality courses that cover different fields and topics.
MOOCs have taken over the Internet, especially with the existence of the Covid-19 pandemic where everyone has to find ways to work and learn more in their homes. This is just one of the reasons why MOOC has been as important as ever, and why MODeL remains to be one of the go-to’s in terms of remote learning. You can read more about it here.
Examples of courses in MODeL are as follows: Executive Course on Remote Teaching and Learning, Business Analytics, Child Rights Protection, and Promotion, and Sustainable Development. Find more courses that are available for you, here.
Looking for more courses and more detailed information about them? You can visit their official website here. But of course, all these courses have their respective qualifications and requirements before an applicant can be admitted.
The requirements differ depending on the kind of program you are applying for. One of the requirements is to pass the University of the Philippines College Admission Test (UPCAT)
But, if you’re applying for postgraduate degrees and postbaccalaureate diplomas –you will be needing an undergraduate degree that is relevant to the program you’re applying for. You can read more about the requirements on their official website. May the odds be in your favor!
Like any other university, OPOU also offers scholarships for deserving applicants and students. These are offered by the UP system and are categorized into three: needs-based, merit-based, and context-based. The full list can be viewed here.
In spite of the significant strides that UPOU has achieved in ensuring the quality of their education, the university still seeks to continuously develop.
UPOU does not rest on its laurels, and neither should you. Let us grab the opportunity to gain new knowledge in a more convenient way through open and distance learning!
