How To Become A Student Volunteer in Mindanao

Imagine yourself getting stuck in the same old routine of lectures, homework, and everything acads (academics). It can get tiring, right? While it’s true that you are advancing your knowledge, it still feels like there’s more to learn beyond the four corners of the classroom.

Well, do you want to make a difference in a more practical way?

Being a student does not only mean learning from books. It’s also the perfect time to experience life outside what you learn in textbooks. And you can do all this through meaningful volunteer work!

Why you should do volunteer work

1. Get to know yourself better

Volunteer work pushes you to set your priorities and gives you a clear vision of who you want to become. As a Mindanaoan, the identification of the self is not detached from your culture. After finding what you are passionate about, retrace if the advocacy uplifts a culture. Then check if the cause gives you room for your own self-growth.

Once you discover your values through experience, you’ll realize that your goal, really is not to serve yourself, but to get involved and find belongingness in the community.

2. Build a second family

Student volunteers can create a network of people with the same aspirations and forward the same advocacies for the common good. These networks will give you the opportunity to find assistance and solutions from a wider community. Volunteer work brings all walks of life together. It allows you to build relationships with people from different backgrounds as you journey towards touching and inspiring more lives.

How to become a student volunteer

Step 1: Know what cause you’re passionate about

Volunteer work allows you take on roles you never thought you could achieve. The first step is to find what you are passionate about. You can choose from advocacies like cutting down on single-use plastics, initiating campaigns to save the Mindanao watersheds, or even simply spending a few hours with kids who would appreciate a helping hand from an ‘Ate’ or ‘Kuya’ like you.

There are many non-government organizations (NGOs) that work on improving the lives of the people, animals, and natural resources in Mindanao. You just have to find the right fit.

Step 2: Sign up for volunteer work aligned with your values
