5 Mindanao-Based Schools Worth Checking Out

In your quest for universities in Mindanao, here are some of the top schools from the region based on popularity, academic standards, percentage of topnotchers, and quality of courses as evaluated by the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) through Certificates of Excellence and Development.

Ateneo de Davao University

Well known for its Ignatian value, Ateneo de Davao University (ADDU) aims to establish a standard of excellence in academic field, spiritual formation, and greater service to the marginalized sector.

Ateneo de Davao University boasts of facilities like an indoor gym, pool, running track, cutting-edge sports complex, auditoriums, student learning hub, multi-leveled libraries and Jesuit’s dormitories in two campuses around Davao City. The construction of junior and senior high school buildings marks the progressive growth of the Ateneo as in institution in the region. Some programs offered are Education, Literature, Mass Communication, Law, Information Technology, Engineering, Accountancy, Business Management and Entrepreneurship among others.

 

Central Mindanao University

Central Mindanao University (CMU) is a public research university located in Maramag, Bukidnon. It is one of the top performing universities in the country with a ranking of 8th in the Commission on Higher Education’s (CHED) 2011 top universities in the Philippines. In 2012, the university ranked 1st and 9th in the Licensure Examination for Agriculturists and obtained 100% passing rate for Electrical and Mechanical Engineers. CHED has also accredited CMU with Centers of Excellence in Agriculture, Forestry and Veterinary Medicine and Centers of Development in Biology and Mathematics.

 

Malayan Colleges Mindanao

Located at the central hub of the south along McArthur Highway in Matina, Davao City, Malayan Colleges Mindanao’s newly constructed buildings offer state of the art facilities equipped with digital learning environment. Malayan Colleges Mindanao is run by Mapua Institute of Technology (MIT) – the biggest engineering school in the country. It was accredited by Commission on Higher Education (CHED) with Centers of Excellence in Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Informational Technology among others.

Malayan Colleges Mindanao also has senior high school programs and graduate studies, and to support the agricultural sector in Mindanao, an Agricultural Engineering track will be integrated into its Civil Engineering curriculum.

 

Mindanao State University – Iligan Institute of Technology

Mindanao State University – Iligan Institute of Technology (MSU-IIT) is known for its excellence in science and technology and its extensive research and community involvement. It is headed by the Mindanao State University System, the only university in the Philippines with a special mandate of integrating cultural communities by providing opportunities for quality and relevant public education and trained manpower skills and technical know-how for the economic development of the region.

Currently, Iligan Institute of Technology has seven Centers of Excellence designated by the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) and eleven Centers of Development in various disciplines such as engineering, medicine, teacher education, and many others.

 

Xavier University

Another constituent of the Ateneo legacy is Xavier University (XU) in Cagayan de Oro. Founded in 1933 as Ateneo de Cagayan, it became the first educational institution to receive university status in 1958, when it was given its present name in honor of the Jesuit missionary St. Francis Xavier.

Today, it has 6 campuses that offer a range of courses like Agriculture, Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Electronics and Communication Engineering, Education, and Literature among others. XU also puts a premium on the promotion of faith through community formation and humanitarian missions, sports and fitness programs, cultural opportunities, and artistic engagements.
