5 Inspirational Movies For Students Struggling With Motivation

If motivation can only be bought in stores, we’d all be lining up at the cashier by now.

Being a student is one of the most exciting times of your life. You can take our word for it! There’s just enough room for learning and growth (and mistakes!) to get to know that person in the mirror. Not to mention, the friends you’ll make along the way.

But as fun as the school days can be, there are moments when excitement turns into worry and frustrationtimes when everything at school seems to be going downhill, may it be a difficult exam, a difficult professor, or a difficult day in general. Do you ever feel that, too?

If yasss, then know that it’s totally normal and you’re not alone! Don’t let those bad days trump the good days ahead of you. Get your ~feels~ and popcorn ready, and binge-watch these five inspirational movies that’ll give you a much-needed motivation boost! Are you ready? (Don’t forget to call your squad. Now.)

1. 3 Idiots

Students are no strangers to pressure. In a highly performance-based world, we are often taught that a good degree opens doors to good jobs, which then lead to other good things in life. Sure, that’s true. But is that all there is? (Hint: nope, there’s so much more)

When you’re overwhelmed with pressure to get that A+ in your report card, take a cue from the three idiots a.k.a. Rancho, Raju, and Farhan! They may be called idiots but they know that a good motivation in school isn’t getting a high grade but a genuine interest in learning. After all, that’s what makes school days worthwhile.

Motivation booster from 3 Idiots:

“You see, your heart gets scared easily, we have to trick it. No matter how big the problem is, you have to tell your heart, ‘It’s no big deal, buddy. Everything will be alright. All is well.’ The problem won’t go away, but you’ll have the courage to face it.” – Rancho

2. The Blind Side

Talents and skills are well-applauded but rarely do we see people going after potential. Did you ever feel like a diamond in the rough? Those moments when you know you’ve got what it takes to run for student council but you’re unsure of yourself or you’ve got the voice to get that role but you lack the confidence to perform on stage? We feel you.

When Michael “Big Mike” Oher lacked the confidence to join his school’s football team, it took someone like Leigh Anne Tuohy to reassure him of his potential. Today, Oher goes down to be an NFL football legend. Don’t you just need someone to remind you what great potential you have? While you wait for your own Leigh Anne to come along, let us be the first to say you are meant for great things.

Motivation booster from The Blind Side:

“Courage is a hard thing to figure. You can have courage based on a dumb idea or mistake… That’s why courage it’s tricky. Should you always do what others tell you to do? But honor, that’s the real reason for you either do something or you don’t. It’s who you are and maybe who you want to be.” – Big Mike

3. Legally Blonde

When people say you can’t do this or do that, you don’t sit down and throw a pity party. You go ahead and prove them wrong. Just like what Elle Woods did! You don’t need to get into Harvard Law to make a point (but if you want to, that’s fine too.). Just remember that only you can set limitations to what you can achieve in life.

Are you planning to shift to your dream course? Go for it. Do you want to graduate with honors? Go for it. Do you want to start your own business? Go for it. The world is just waiting for your next move. Make your dreams happen IRL. Like, it’s hard?

Motivation booster from Legally Blonde:

“It is with passion, courage of conviction, and strong sense of self that we take our next steps into the world, remembering that first impressions are not always correct. You must always have faith in people. And most importantly, you must always have faith in yourself.”  – Elle Woods

4. Dead Poets Society

Sometimes, students get lucky and meet teachers who change their lives for the better. Do you have a teacher like that? When school days get routinary and there’s hardly any excitement to learn (read: get up early for a 7 AM class), we thank teachers who go the extra mile to break the mold and keep us motivated!

Watch Dead Poets Society to remember what it’s like to seize every school day and make life extraordinary. Because tbh, you won’t be a student forever. You’ve got to make each day count! Now, go read your books and have fun learning.

Motivation booster from Dead Poets Society:

“Carpe diem. Seize the day. Make your lives extraordinary.”  – John Keating

5. Mona Lisa Smile

Last but definitely not least, here’s another film about a teacher who might’ve had unconventional teaching methods that got school officials raising their eyebrows. Set in the 1950s where women get educated to pursue their ultimate dream (to be a wife, that is.), Katherine Watson steps in and challenges her students to aspire for something more than marriage. After all, aren’t women capable of so much more?

Whether you’re a woman or not, you can learn a thing or two from this film like breaking away from society’s expectations and tapping on your full potential. Do you want to get married? Go ahead. Do you want to get married and pursue law? That’s fine, too. The future lies in your hands.

Motivation booster from Mona Lisa Smile:

“Not all who wander are aimless. Especially not those who seek truth beyond tradition, beyond definition, beyond the image.” – Betty Warren

The truth is, you need not hope to buy motivation elsewhere. It’s inside you and around you. In this case, even in the movies you watch! Sure, there will be gloomy days ahead but never forget that it’s all part of what makes your student journey worthwhile. Find motivation in both big and small things. (If all else fails, at least there’s this list of five inspiring movies to motivate you.)
