Everything You Need To Know About The Medical Technologist Licensure Exam

Some people faint at the sight of blood, while others find it fascinating. Often times, the latter group of people find their way to a career in Medical Technology.

Medical Technology (MedTech) is a branch of laboratory medicine that applies medical techniques and processes to detect, diagnose, prevent, or treat various diseases. Think science geniuses performing tests in the lab! That’s what they do.

If you’re interested to pursue MedTech as a profession, know that taking a college degree in Medical Technology, Public Health, or related health course is not enough. You should also pass the Medical Technologist Licensure Exam to seal the deal!

If you’re all set to take the next steps towards becoming a full-fledged Medical Technologists, here’s all you need to know about the MedTech board exam:

What is the Medical Technologist Licensure Exam?

The Medical Technologist Licensure Exam is one of the 43 annual board exams conducted by the Professional Regulatory Commission (PRC). The exam screens and qualifies aspiring health professionals to practice medical technology based on the standards written in the Republic Act No. 5527 or the Medical Technology Law.

What is the coverage of the Medical Technologist Licensure Exam?

Thanks to science and technology, along with our ever-increasing need to prioritize health care, MedTech has become increasingly important and in-demand career to have. Such a profession requires highly technical skills and knowledge in the health sciences.

According to the Board of Medical Technology, these are the subjects you can expect in the MedTech licensure exam:

Blood Banking and Serology, Clinical Chemistry, Microbiology, Hematology, and Parasitology are considered major subjects, while Clinical Microscopy and Histopathologic Techniques and MedTech Laws are minor subjects. Both major and minor subjects will have 100 multiple choice questions each in the exam.

What is the passing rate for the Medical Technologist Licensure Exam?

If you’re going to take the MedTech board exam, you’ll need to have a general average of at least 75% in the written test! You can do that, right? Make sure also to score no less than 50% in any of the major subjects. Those are very important!

What are the eligibility requirements of the Medical Technologist Licensure Exam?

Based on the PRC official website, those who want to take the MedTech licensure exam should meet the following criteria:

  • Filipino citizen
  • At least 18 years old
  • In good health and is of good moral character
  • A graduate of Bachelor of Science in Medical Technology (Medical Science Technology), Bachelor of Science in Public Health, or other paramedical professions*
  • Has completed the application requirements
  • Has paid the required examination fees
  • Has complied with other requirements prescribed by the PRC

*Graduates from other paramedical professions must meet the minimum requirements set in the Medical Technology Law to be eligible to take the licensure exam.

 

What are the application requirements of the Medical Technologist Licensure Exam?

Should you be eligible to take the MedTech licensure exam (we know you are!), the next step towards your MedTech dreams is to prepare all the requirements for your application. Take note of the following documents:

  • NSO/PSA Birth Certificate
  • Transcript of Records with scanned picture and Remarks “For Board Examination Purposes”
  • Examination fee payment (Php 900)
  • Certificate of Refresher Course Completion*

*Only applicable if you’re taking the exam for the fourth time

 

When is the Medical Technologist Licensure Exam schedule?

The MedTech licensure exam happens twice a year, each with specific schedules depending on the PRC and the Board of Medical Technology. You can check the exam dates and other announcements in the PRC official website and Facebook page.

Based on the 2019 licensure exams schedule released by the PRC, the next MedTech board exam will be conducted on March 13-14, 2019 and September 21-22, 2019. The exam will also be held simultaneously in PRC centers in Manila, Baguio, Cagayan de Oro, Cebu, Davao, Iloilo, Tacloban, Tuguegarao, and Zamboanga.

 

How to apply for the Medical Technologist Licensure Exam?

With online technology bringing everything at the tip of our fingers, you can now skip much of the leg work and start processing your exam application online. For that, you can treat PRC’s Licensure Examination and Registration Information System (LERIS) as your new BFF!

Here’s a quick overview of your exam application process:

  1. Prepare all your requirements.
  2. Register and set up your LERIS account.
  3. Select the MedTech Licensure Examination tab.
  4. Schedule an appointment with PRC.
  5. Choose your preferred payment method and pay for the exam fee.
  6. Print your application form.
  7. Proceed to the PRC on your appointment date and submit your requirements.

PS. Even after you pass the licensure exam, keep your LERIS account top of mind since you’ll use it for other PRC services… like processing your MedTech license! *wink wink*

 

Where can I check the Medical Technologist Licensure Exam results?

Fast forward to the nerve-racking but most-awaited day a.k.a. the exam results day, you can check the PRC official website for the complete list of the board passers and top performing schools in the MedTech licensure exam. Also, you can search for your name directly to the online verification portal to know how well you did in the exam. All you have to do is input your personal information and exam details to proceed. Now, ain’t that convenient?

Should you take the exam this coming March, you can expect the results on March 19, 2019. That’s just five working days after the exam date!
