LONDON, England – Local Filipino social enterprise Edukasyon.ph has been awarded during the prestigious Financial Times and the International Finance Corporation (FT/IFC) Transformational Business Awards for their contribution in making education opportunities accessible to every child for free through an online portal.
Out of 148 submissions from 152 organizations involving projects in more than 84 countries, Edukasyon.ph has been named as the Achievement in Sustainable Development with a focus on Education, Knowledge, and Skills category for their entry, www.edukasyon.ph, the fastest growing education portal in the Philippines.
“This is a great opportunity to share to the world what we are doing here in the Philippines. The education mismatch affecting the transition from education to careers is not only an issue for developing countries but an international concern that needs to be addressed,” Edukasyon.ph CEO and Founder Henry Motte-Muñoz said.
In the Philippines, a 2016 Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) report showed that almost half of unemployed persons in the country are from the 18-24 age group. “One key cause of poverty in the country is the 30% youth unemployment rate due to job skills mismatch or low relevance and unaffordable higher education,” Motte-Muñoz said.
“But this is not an isolated case. There are districts in France where unemployment rates nearly twice as high as the rest of the country. In Italy, the youth unemployment rate is at 39% due to various factors including education.”
Winners of the said awards will be announced at the FT/IFC Transformational Business Awards dinner on June 08 at the Hilton Bankside in London. A business conference will also be held before the awarding which will focus on the role of the private sector in attaining the UN Sustainable Development Goals, in particular, the topic of health and education.
The said conference will also be attended by top innovators, investors, business leaders, and policymakers who will share their insights on these issues with a view to formulating specific action steps.
“At Edukasyon.ph, we seek to empower students everyday by being the go-to online portal for all important education to career information as these students discover the right track or course for them; choose the right career; and apply online to their dream school for free,” Motte-Muñoz said.
