5 Ways to Encourage your College Kids to Eat Healthy

As a parent, you only want what is best for your kids. And you would do anything you can to make life easier for them. This is true especially when it comes to health. With the convenience brought by fast food chains and instant food, college students tend to compromise their health.

But you can turn this around!

Eating healthy becomes simpler when supported by the people around them especially their family members. The following are some ideas on how to make your kids choose to eat healthier:

 

  1. Provide cooking instructions

This may seem a bit silly but more often than not, kids these days are intimidated by the mere idea of cooking. To encourage them to try cooking healthy meals for themselves, provide step-by-step instructions that could help them approach the new task with more confidence. Cooking could also be very rewarding and regarded as a good stress-reliever.

  1. Help out with food prep

Food preparation is all the rage these days and this seems like one of best ways to let

children eat healthier. Most students’ qualms are their lack of time in preparing or even thinking of what to prepare. Help them prepare as it not only saves energy, it also saves a lot of time and effort that could be spent on more important things.

  1. Present the healthy alternatives

Craving for something sweet? Munch on some berries! Feeling the need to eat chips? Veer away from potato chips and munch on some veggie or banana chips. There are always healthier options for sinful cravings. You just have to present them to your children as early as possible!

  1. Make healthy food available

Parents should also be conscious of the food they stock at home. Buy healthy food that your children can snack on such as nuts or dried fruit. Make a switch from white to brown rice, or high-fiber juices instead of sugary concoctions.

  1. Be a good example

Eating healthy is a collective effort. If you live with your child who is in college, it’s best to influence them to be healthier by having the initiative to live a healthier lifestyle. Parents play a vital role in a child’s life and they usually mirror whichever behavior is shown to them by their mom and dad.
