How I Started My Passion Project in My Junior Year of High School

I grew up in a school where we were taught that we could make a difference in our own way. We were raised to be individuals who had compassion, grit, and social responsibility. We were raised to be leaders. Being raised in this environment has given me the skills and support I need to go after what I want. In my junior year of high school, I took the leap and decided to start my very own passion project. Since then, it has been such an incredible journey of slowly fulfilling my dreams and helping others.

What is a passion project

A passion project is anything that you freely choose to work on. It’s a side project that you are committed to as it is something that you truly love and are passionate about, hence the name. Passion projects can range from opening up small businesses, starting a blog, learning a new hobby, and in my case, starting an organization.

Why should you start your own passion project

It is so easy to get caught up in school work, with the never-ending routine of waking up, going to school, studying when you get home, then sleeping. Passion projects are a great way to let loose and to learn because you yourself want to learn about something. There are no rules, no grades to meet, no standards to reach. It is your project and you are in charge.  My very own passion project has allowed me to explore my desired career path at such a young age. It has given me the chance to do what I love doing and inspire others to do the same.

How do you start a passion project

The first step in starting your very own passion project is to do your research on your desired project. For instance, if you are thinking of setting up your own online business, research on the current trends, marketing strategies, etc. It’s important to know what the project will entail. Will it be taking up most of your time? Will you be needing team members? Make a list of the things that you have and the things that you need. In this way, you’ll be able to understand what kind of support and assistance you will be asking from others. Moreover, I have found it incredibly helpful to talk to someone who is more or less working the same project as you are. They have been through the whole process before and they are always willing to help. Don’t be afraid to ask questions and advice! I’m immensely thankful for the colleagues who have been patient with me through the entire process, from the Skype calls, early morning deliverables, and unending requirements.

Tips and Tricks

I have narrowed down the top three tips I have for anyone who wants to begin their passion project.

1. Schedule everything.

Planning is key especially if you don’t have a boss who will constantly remind you what to do. In this case, you are your own boss. It’s important to set meetings with yourself as well. Take this time to identify what works and what doesn’t work so you can change that.

2. Networking.

Spread the word about your passion project! Tell your friends and family about what you are doing and how you will be needing their support. Utilize social media in getting the word out! Instagram stories have been popular for interacting with people and getting feedback through polls. You might want to check that out if you are starting your own business!

3. Be committed.

I think this is the most important factor in your passion project. You have to be sure you want to put in time and effort in this. It is important to know that although there will be bumps along the way, the happiness and the sense of fulfilment are unparalleled!

I encourage you to the leap to start your very own project. Explore your passion and put yourself out there. It is indeed scary going out of your comfort zone and pursuing what you truly want to do. However, you will be able to garner new skills and learn new things about yourself. Just remember to always have the grit and commitment as you go off!
