How to Find an Internship for Senior High School Students

Internships allow you to explore different career paths as a senior high school student and help you realize what’s the best fit for you before you choose your college major. You learn new life skills as well as establish connections that will both be useful as you make your way to the real world!

It may sound difficult to land an internship, but in reality, you just need to look harder around you! Here are tips on how to find an internship opportunity that suits you best!

Research companies that interest you

Look for companies and brands that you believe in and that you’d love to work for. Let’s say, you want to be a doctor and you would love to intern in a clinic. Research local clinics nearby, note their location, contact details, and other information that you might need.

You should also ask your parents, older relatives, and teachers if they know a company or anyone who is looking for interns! It is important to use your resources wisely. Some schools already have connections with companies where other students have previously interned at. Write a killer cover letter and resume

Make a list of the skills that you have and the services you can offer. In your cover letter, it is important to note what you want to learn throughout the duration of your internship. Show them that you are eager to absorb as many values and learnings as you can. As for your resume, never fabricate anything to make it stand out. Some tips on writing a resume are the following:

• Highlight your education: Include positions held, clubs joined, honors received, and competitions won
• Use numbers! Don’t just say you led the prom committee. Indicate how many were you in the team, how many students attended, and how much money you have raised to make the event happen.
• Include references: Ask for permission if you can state one of your counselors or teachers who know you well as your reference. Your prospective employer will then be able to verify what you have put in your resume through these people!

Prepare for the interview

Most companies require interviews for the applicants.You have to be proactive in preparing for this as it can make or break your chance at interning at the specific company. Make sure to come prepared with knowledge on the industry and the company. Take note of specific trends that interest you in the industry as well as why you are choosing that specific company among the many others.

When introducing yourself, make it an elevator pitch. Indicate your academics, extracurricular activities or jobs, and why you want to intern in under 2 minutes. Interviews are also a good chance for you to ask questions. Try looking for common areas of interest to break the ice.
