Types of Emotional Intelligence Students Need to Master

Intellect is not the only measure of one’s intelligence but research shows that emotional intelligence is just as important. Emotional intelligence (EI) is described as the ability to understand, use, and manage emotions. EI helps us build strong relationships, make informed decisions, and deal with difficult situations. Among all these, there are four fundamental EIs students need to master.

Know oneself
Emotionally intelligent people know what they’re good and bad at and their boundaries. People with high EIs do not only know their strengths and weaknesses, they also know how to leverage these traits by working with the right people in the right situation. They might seem like pushovers because of their politeness and compassion for colleagues but their EI helps them set boundaries. They know when to say yes and no to others. This awareness is important to avoid being overworked or stressed out from taking on too many tasks.

Find your balance
Admit it, as much as you’d like to spend the whole day binge-watching on Netflix or keep yourself updated on Twitter, you still need to dedicate time to studying. Finding the sweet spot between school work and your hobbies might seem tricky but being able to do so is a sign of high emotional intelligence. In essence, this is all about managing your time and not putting yourself on the extremes of studying 24/7 or just playing video games all day. Keeping a planner and setting schedules are effective ways to stay on track and keep the balance. </span


Show empathy 
According to Daniel Goleman, psychologist and author of Focus: The Hidden Driver of Excellence, empathy is one of the five components of emotional intelligence. In fact, being able to relate to others, show compassion, and take the time to help someone are all crucial components of EI. Being able to put oneself in another person’s shoes will actually make you more understanding and help you accept people for who they are.

Focus on the positive
There will be days when someone or something rains on your parade but having emotional intelligence means that you would not let that cloud get in your way. Practicing optimism and mindfulness are keys to achieving a life of positivity. Instead of poring over that bad exam score, devote your time to evaluating the questions to see where you went wrong or study for the next exam. Devote your time to circumstances you have control over, not those you cannot change.

Embrace change
As cliche as it may sound, change is the only constant thing in this ever-evolving world. Instead of dreading change, you must embrace it. Being able to adapt to changing circumstances will be essential in the modern workplace because it will be highly competitive. Flexibility and adaptability (a.k.a having backup plans) are skills you need to hone. Don’t let your fear of change hinder you from success!
