College is a lot like learning to ride a bicycle— you will fall and the bruises will hurt but you will get up and keep cycling until you reach your goal. It is a phase in your student life where challenges are part of the daily grind and where expectations may not always be the reality. Here we present what a typical day looks like in the life of a college student.
You’re thrilled. You can’t sleep and you’ve been trying to sleep for the last two hours. Even counting sheep won’t help you now but you must breathe. Relax and sleep soundly tonight because tomorrow will be another day in the “almost” real world called college life!
You need sleep four hours ago and want this 10-page paper to be over with. Heck, you need at least a B on it. “Keep calm and carry on!” you silently mumble, as your hands shake and each finger hits the keyboard. You’ve had too much of everything but never enough sleep.
You’re up early and ready to face the world! You’ll be productive. You’ll be a ball of positivity. You’ll treat this day as another gift from the university gods and everything you do today will be another step towards graduation day.
You’re still up from last night, sipping your first cup of joe and eating stale bread. Much like how all the other days have been, you dress up and show up. But like the rock star that you are, you let the good, nay, manageable, times roll and march along the winding road towards graduation.
You just can’t wait to see your professor again, chat with your friends, and see how your exam results turned out. This is the first of the 5 classes lined up for the day and you’re thrilled to learn everything- from media law to accounting, even the tenets of philosophy and ethics. Indeed, knowledge is power!
If you could just afford a clone to take this class, and the class after that, you would; but then again, you remember that you’re a human being living on school allowances so the answer is “No, you can’t afford that, sweetie.” Exhausted from another all-nighter, you muster the energy to participate in class. Your professor commends your discussion on quantum supercomputing and hails your homework as the best. The world seems brighter now, but maybe it’s just the severe lack of sleep that is apparently making your eye twitch.
It’s lunch time and you definitely want to avoid that iconic Cady Heron moment inside a dingy bathroom stall. You’ll join your friends at a self-proclaimed cool table and greet more friends passing by.
You are becoming an independent soul. Lunch breaks are also known as study breaks or that elusive thing called nap time! Now, you’re catching a snooze under the tree where the gentle breeze lulls you to dreamland.
Home at 7:00 pm; bed at 9:00 pm. Such is the life of a college student! After studying for tomorrow’s test, you will be sound asleep. Your cool and comfortable room will be your oyster and you will be the pearl, nestled upon its soft pillows.
You just got home. A few steps up the stairs and you crash on the bed. No dinner, no shower. You’re finally reacquainted with your bed and you greet it with open arms. Finally, sleep.
College is a lot like this 24-hour saga- studying until the sun rises, skipping some meals over precious sleep, and for some weird cosmic reason, having some fun in the chaos of it all. This phase of one’s student life involves a lot of trying and it helps to know the real deal. This way, you can manage your own expectations and prepare for what really lies ahead.
