5 Reasons You Should Join A Short-Term Exchange Program

Learning does not only happen within the four walls of the classroom. And a short-term exchange program could be a great opportunity to further develop as a student.

A short-term exchange program refers to a program wherein a student studies abroad for a short period of time in his or her university’s partner institution. The program usually offers a variety of classes and lets the student experience the foreign country’s cultural activities as well.

In order to find a short-term exchange program, you can inquire at your university’s Office of External Relations or any other office in charge of international relations. They can help you find a partner institution offering an exchange program you can participate in.

Aside from accomplishing courses from a reputable school in a foreign country, here are other reasons you should participate in a short-term exchange program:

  1. You get to see the world.

Joining an exchange program means that you will most likely live abroad for at least a week or two. This is a good opportunity to explore the country and visit some tourist destinations. It is like hitting two birds with one stone!

  1. Experience a new environment and culture.

In an exchange program, you will be able to immerse in other cultures as you meet other students from different backgrounds. Plus, you get to experience life as a local—from commuting to and from school, eating at the university cafeteria to hanging out with friends during breaks.

  1. Enrich your education.

The main reason for participating in an exchange program is to educate yourself about the topic or course you chose. The program will provide you a global perspective of your study.

  1. Achieve personal development.

Take risks while you are young. By joining an exchange program, you step outside your comfort zone even for just a short period of time. This will push you to adapt to a new environment and culture. It may help you discover more about yourself, and what you truly want to do. Furthermore, it is a chance to meet and make new friends from all over the world.

  1.  It’s a cheaper option than a long-term exchange program.

Unlike a long-term exchange program, a short-term exchange program is much cheaper due to the shorter duration—about a week to less than six months. This means less expenses for accommodation and allowance, while still getting the experience of being an exchange student.

If you are lucky enough, you might find a scholarship grant or short-term exchange program that offers free tuition and accommodation.

Each program has its own set of applicant qualifications and admission requirements. Usually, universities abroad require a high Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) or Quality Point Index (QPI). These refer to the weighted average of your grades in college. Make sure that your university is a partner of your target institution to be eligible for exchange.

Finding a short-term exchange program that suits you (and complying with all the admission requirements!) might seem like a long and tedious process. But all your hard work will pay off once you get this experience of a lifetime!
