Are you thinking of taking an English Proficiency Test for work?

Anyone who’s eyeing an opportunity abroad has probably spotted an English Proficiency Test among their requirements. This test is used to assess a foreign individual’s ability to comprehend and communicate using the most predominant language in the world.

And if you’re having a hard time choosing between a handful of English Proficiency Exams available today, don’t ya worry! We’ve narrowed it down to one particular exam to make you feel better: the Test of English for International Communication (TOEIC).

What is the TOEIC?

The TOEIC is a two-hour assessment test that examines a foreign individual’s ability to effectively use the English language in any business or organization.

What Are the Benefits of Taking the TOEIC?

Aside from being a school requirement in schools abroad, your TOEIC grade is something that you can add to your resume upon graduation. Like an extra credit! Most international employers also consider this as a good way to market yourself, which is why it helps to add TOEIC scores to resumes whenever job seekers apply for jobs abroad.

When Can You Take The TOEIC in the Philippines?

TOEIC exams are usually held every second Saturday of the month, regardless of the kind of exam you’re going to take. Last day of registrations also ends every second Wednesday of each month, which gives you three days to finish an exam.

How Much is the TOEIC in the Philippines?

It really depends on what kind of TOEIC exam you’ll take. You can choose between any of the following exams, each with their own coverage.

Type of TOEIC

Price

TOEIC Listening and Reading Test* P2,300.00
TOEIC Speaking and Writing Test* P5,500.00
TOEIC Speaking-Only Test* P4,000.00
TOEIC Bridge P1,000.00

* Applicants who are planning to answer any of these exams can avail of an English language workshop, which you can enroll for P500.00.

Local mailing fees for the results cost P200.00, while international mailing fees add up to P2,000.00.

What’s The Coverage?

The TOEIC comes in multiple choice questions and is also broken down into two categories, namely: the Reading Section and the Listening Section, and the Speaking and Writing exam. They’re pretty much what you’d expect in any exam that involves reading, listening, speaking, and writing, only this time you do all of these in a computer.

Also, keep in mind that you don’t have to memorize any sort of technical jargon for this test! It may have some references to business settings, but that’s just it! There’s no need to read certain textbooks to answer the exam. You really just need a good grasp of your English-speaking skills to pass!

What’s the Difference Between the TOEIC and TOEFL?

Although TOEIC and the Test of English as a Foreign Language (otherwise known as TOEFL) sound nearly identical, they actually differ in various ways.

For instance, TOEFL tests an applicant’s ability to perform in an academic environment that uses English as a primary language, which is good for students who are planning to study in another country. TOEIC, on the other hand, gauges an applicant’s ability to use the language in the workforce, which is best sought by fresh graduates who are looking for job opportunities in other countries.

The TOEFL is also divided into four categories, namely: listening, reading, speaking, and writing. As mentioned above, the TOEIC is separated into two elaborate exams, but they work on different mediums. The Reading and Listening Test is given to applicants through traditional pencil-and-paper, while the Speaking and Writing Test is answered digitally.

How Long Does the TOEIC Take?

Depending on the test that you take, the TOEIC lasts more than an hour at best. You can answer the Reading and Listening test in around two-and-a-half-hours, while the Speaking and Writing Test varies. The Speaking section usually finishes after 20 minutes, while the Writing section takes around 60 minutes to accomplish.

How Can I Prepare For the TOEIC?

Since a lot of the items in the exam aren’t technical by nature, you don’t necessarily have to pore over all the English textbooks that you have at your arsenal. There are ways you can review for the TOEIC, though, and all it takes is doing one important thing: practice!

So are you ready to take the TOEIC? Why not start preparing for the exam as early as now and get that high score! Whether you’re studying for IELTS, TOEFL, or TOEIC, review for all the essential English Proficiency Exams here.
