How to Review for the TOEIC Exam
There are plenty of international English tests that anyone who intends to take opportunities abroad has to take. Although international students are familiar with English proficiency tests such as Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) and the International English Language Testing System (IELTS), a third exam also exists for those who wish to take job opportunities abroad: the Test of English for International Communication (TOEIC).
What is the TOEIC?
First conceptualized by the US-based non-profit organization called the Educational Testing Service (ETS) in the 1970s, the TOEIC is a two-hour assessment exam that measures a jobseeker’s English skills in a corporate setting. It’s also a valuable addition to any resume, which is why most TOEIC takers include their score whenever they apply for jobs internationally.
What Do I Expect in the TOEIC?
The TOEIC is a multiple choice exam that is divided into two categories: the Listening Section and the Reading Section, and the Writing and Speaking Section. Both of these exams are self-explanatory and straightforward, in the sense that they really test your ability to communicate using the English language. You don’t have to enroll in a course or read textbooks to answer them: each of the items in this exam may cite references to workplaces, but other than that, you won’t find technical jargon in the test. You really just need to hone your English-speaking skills.
How Can You Review For the TOEIC?
So now that you’ve decided on taking the TOEIC, how do you prepare for the test itself and get an amazing score?
Since you don’t necessarily have to memorize textbooks, all it takes is a lot of practice! With that being said, there are ways for you to get the hang of the English language through these tips before taking the exam:
Read, read, read.
One of the best ways to improve your vocabulary is to read nonstop. Be it books, magazines, newspapers or websites, you can always find English-language material in all kinds of places.
Make sure that the content is something that genuinely piques your interest to make it faster to understand.
Listen to the radio.
If you’re a music lover, then you’re on the right track (pun intended!) But if not, then you should start paying attention to the lyrics of the songs that you hear on a daily basis. Being able to decipher English lyrics as each word weaves with the melody not only improves your listening skills but also strengthens your comprehension of expressions, vocabulary, and idioms. Listening to music also gives students a firmer grasp of an English word’s stress pattern. Just make sure though that you listen to the right songs!
Watch TV.
Visuals aside, there is a use in paying attention to how each word is uttered on the big screen. It might sound counterproductive to prepare for an exam by consuming entertainment at the same time, but watching movies and news broadcasts also have a way of improving your listening skills. Each word you hear on TV strengthens both your listening skills and English comprehension.
Speak English Every Day.
Just like learning any foreign language, communicating in English on a daily basis helps you get in the flow of things. Make sure that you’re on the right track by writing, conversing, and reading in English every so often. It helps you get used to the language and it gradually helps you become better at what you’re doing. Practice, practice, practice!
Write a Journal.
What better way to strengthen your mastery in English than to write down your thoughts in English! Whether you choose to do so in paper or in digital form, expressing your thoughts in English trains your brain into getting used to the language. Try reading your work to yourself out loud – it can help you listen to yourself and understand how each word sounds. (Also, read it with feelings!)
Be Confident!
It might be easier said than done, but ultimately, this is the most crucial advice we can give you. There’s nothing more important than showing how calm you can be in any given task, and this includes the process of taking the exam! Overall, practice makes perfect and knowing that you’re capable of getting a high score in this exam can earn better results!
