Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD) is the most cited university by international experts as an emerging leader in engineering education in a new study by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). The study also named SUTD as one of the top ten emerging engineering schools, making it one of the most coveted study abroad university destinations for Filipinos.
The reports stated, “what is most striking about SUTD’s approach is its connectivity: connectivity between cross-disciplinary faculty teaching teams, connectivity between courses in the curriculum and connectivity between students, within and outside their formal studies. This connectivity plays a major role in shaping the distinctive characteristics of SUTD’s student and graduates.
The recognition of SUTD is the result of a benchmarking study of global state-of-the-art undergraduate engineering. The study, which was commissioned by MIT’s New Engineering Education Transformation (NEET) initiative, a program of reform in undergraduate engineering education at the Institute, and authored by Ruth Graham, was released on March 27.
The MIT-commissioned report canvassed opinions from a wide range of international experts, and SUTD was selected among a small group of universities as an emerging leader in engineering education, which puts SUTD’s engineering programme alongside renowned engineering education names; University College London (UK), Charles Sturt University (Australia), and University of Technology Delft (Netherlands).
“To be identified as an engineering school of the future and a global leader in engineering education is a major achievement for SUTD. This is a great acknowledgement of the curriculum and pedagogy that we have put in place to nurture tomorrow’s technically-grounded leaders and innovators. It also gives us the impetus to keep pushing the boundaries to meet the changing expectations and needs of students, parents, industry and society,” Professor Chong Tow Chong, President, SUTD said.
