Sure, studying abroad is exciting – it’s definitely something everyone should try at least once, but it’s no walk in the park. It’s true when they say that traveling in itself is educational. And if you marry both travel and formal education, you are bound to learn something beyond the curricula.
Here are some of the lessons you can learn before, during, and after a study abroad experience:
The only way to survive is to make the necessary adjustments
This is lesson numero uno. Just as how we were taught about Darwin’s theory of evolution, the only way for survival is through adaptation. Studying outside the country would require you to adjust to various factors that contribute to your overall stay. These include adjustments to the weather, culture, behavior, beliefs, general societal expectations, and of course their approach to education. Teaching styles are different from all over the world, so it would be wise to devote enough time and resources to prepare well, should the educational culture be different from what you’re used to.
2. Acads-life balance is important
Your studies should always be prioritized but that doesn’t mean you’re not allowed to have fun. Always take the time to relax and do what makes you happy. Not only because it keeps you happy and healthy but it will also be reflected in the work you do.
Choose people wisely
Every experience is made better or worse by the people you surround yourself with. Be sure to pick the right people to help you, bring out the best in you, and make your stay worthwhile. Life’s too short to be around people who bring nothing but negative energy. Plus, these people will be your family and support system away from home.
When the going gets tough, the tough gets going
Studying abroad can be difficult. Each person’s experience is different. For example, it may take others faster to cope with the adjustments while others might take a while ‘til their comfortable. But do know there’s always a light at the end of the tunnel. It’s important to never stop because you’ll never know what good is waiting for you at the end.
It’s okay to feel alone sometimes
There will be times that you’d feel as if you’re in your own little bubble and that’s fine. Try to approach this with a different mindset by being more productive or starting a new hobby. Introspection is important from time to time and quite frankly, reflecting is easier done when you’re away since you’re able to see the bigger picture. Take the time to know yourself better, and find ways to improve yourself.
