Top 5 Arts and Design Schools Abroad

Draw a straight line.

Small circles, big circles.

Don’t shade outside the shape.

As young as you are, you already have a basic knowledge of arts and design. In fact, don’t you just love creating your own artwork when you were a kid? Ah, flying birds and rolling hills in one stroke! (And you grew up thinking you’re a talented artist too because your parents told you so.)

Are you aspiring to be the next Picasso or Van Gogh? Tbh, everyone has an artist inside them. It’s true! But it’s also a fact that not everyone will pursue it as a career when they grow up. While the arts and design is a broad field to explore, there are plenty of well-known schools around the globe that can equip you with necessary skills to fully embrace the craft.

Based on the latest QS University Rankings, one of the three most-read annual publication of international school rankings, these are the top five schools in the arts and design around the globe that are sure to bring out the creativity in you:

1. Royal College of Art (RCA)

Started as the Government School of Design in 1837, RCA is a public research university which currently leads the arts and design field through 29 distinctive programmes. Its courses are offered in four schools, namely: architecture, arts and humanities, communication, and design. And it’s the only university in the world to entirely offer postgraduate courses!

At present, the school has three campuses across London City strategically located in key cultural sites in the region such as Battersea, Kensington, and White City.

2. Parsons The New School for Design

Located at the heart of bustling New York City, Parsons is one out of the five colleges of The New School. After its   1896, the university now offers 25 different programs in five schools: Art and Design History and Theory, Art, Media and Technology, Constructed Environments, Design Strategies, and Fashion.

Dedicated to bringing creativity and innovation from New York to every part of the globe, the school has extended its community abroad with Parsons Paris in 1921, making it the European campus of The New School university system.

3. Rhode Island School of Design (RISD)

Established in 1877, RISD is considered as one of the first art and design schools in the United States of America (USA). It offers an extensive list of undergraduate and postgraduate programs with 19 architecture, design, fine arts, and art education majors—all focused on educating students in the areas of critical making, sustainability, social responsibility, research, and entrepreneurship.

One of the largest museums in the US, the RISD Museum of Art, is an affiliate of the school. Its collection features a wide range of notable works from the school, state, and from around the world.

4. Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)

True to its motto “Mind and Hand”, MIT continues to advance and shape Science and Technology in the world since its establishment in 1861. While this private research university is more famously known for its excellence in the physical sciences and engineering, art and design have always been embedded in its culture.

With museums, galleries, and performance spaces on campus, students are given a free hand to express, create, and innovate art and design with over 25 degree programs in the arts and design field.

5. Politecnico di Milano

Known as the oldest university in Milan and the largest technical university in Italy, this state university is located on seven campuses in Milan and nearby cities. It also has 12 departments taught in four schools.

The School of Design, in particular, has curricular offerings at all levels with bachelor’s programs in communication design, fashion design, interior design, and product design. Its competence as an academic institution was even recognized when it became the first Italian university in the QS University Rankings.
